Rumassala Sama Chaitya
The great gift of nature to Galle city is amazing. Galle Harbor or even Galluthota has been created because of the Rumassala mountain range. The beautiful coral reef called Bonavista on the shallow Galle coast and Unawatuna are the mana bandana areas that have been born due to Rumassala. "Bonavista" in Portuguese means beautiful view. Legend has it that Rumassala mountain was formed from a part of the Himalayan mountain. It is said that Ritigala and Rumasala were created by the fall of a part of the Himalaya containing medicinal herbs brought by Hanumanta to treat Rama's brother Lakshmana who was injured in the Ravana-Rama war. In 2003, considering the biodiversity and ecological value, the government made Rumsala a sanctuary. 20 hectares of the 170 hectare Rumassala sanctuary is a reserved forest. Many valuable rare medicinal plants can be seen in this forest. Rumassala mountain has a height of about 120 meters. Spreading up to Unawatuna, this consists of two points. One end extends towards Bonavista and the other end towards Vallee Devalaya. In this small forest, several plant communities such as coastal plants, mangroves, wet zone, dry zone and arid zone can be seen. The Japanese Peace Pagoda, visible to Galle city from among these canopies, is located in the Bonavista area, and from there you can see the Galle area and the port beautifully. An image of Hanumanta is also created next to this Sama Chaitya, probably due to the folklore prevailing here.
Although it is located by the sea, plants such as Kitul, Mavevel, Radaliya, Godapara, Mahnuga, Goraka, Madang, Walamba, Dibul, Ruk Attana, and Wildel can also be seen in this Rumassala forest. It has been confirmed by Ruhunu University that there are about 150 herbs here, known as Ruhunu Osu Uyana. It is said that in the past, Rumassala consisted of a dense forest. At that time, drinking water was provided to the ships that came to Galle port, and with the help of the Japanese Nipponson Myohoji sect, the Unawatuna Peace Pagoda was completed on February 23, 2004. The birth of Bodhisattvas, Buddhahood and Parinirvana of the Buddha are depicted. There are four Stupas of this type, Sri Pada, Bandarawela, Walapane and Ampara. In addition, you can see this type of stupa in America, India, Australia, Japan, Nepal, Italy. As of 2000, 80 Peace Temples have been built around the world in Europe, Asia, and the United States.
